I will say this much, that makes a ton of sense. No one really sees the other side of an issue that the media and government has been attempting to keep blinders on them with their "too simple to actually work" propaganda. And that's what alot of this protectionism talk is, a ton of "Buy American or You're a traitor" propaganda. There are ways to look at this, and ways to support the american small business without having to give up everything one loves and enjoys. There is a lot of talk about this subject and a ton others over at my favorite blog http://americanboom.com/blog/. Go check it out, they show you how you can Buy American the right way.

Great article. With tax time just around the corner, and many of us thinking about RRSP contributions, this really makes it clear who should contribute to what.

Very good dissection of the chain of events that triggered such a huge crash in such a short time. As you say, the short covering is there and markets (at the time of writing this) are bouncing and dancing. The announcement about "unlimited" support by fed and govt to the distressed sector is doing miracles :)

I as a trader will be looking at next resistance level to short again though. As you said, the economy is not out of trouble yet and chances are this problem will only increase in intensity in coming days. No matter what "steps" world leaders take.

Well put, although as far as investment strategy goes I would suggest (to fellow readers) that unless you've got time, smarts, and money you're better off not trying to buy or sell any investments. Even if you do have those things, you might be wasting your time.

In the book "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" I learned that over a 40-year period or longer, the "buying the market" outperforms top professional investors and mutual funds on average; picking a good mutual fund is no easier than picking stocks, and mutual funds lose money (relative to the market) over time due to commissions and management fees.

Jason, you've pulled together an excellent, concise sketch of how we've come to this thorny situation in global financial markets. It's a subject I've also been giving a lot of thought to and, like you, my view is that the one thing we learn from financial bubbles is that we don't learn from financial bubbles!

Under our current voting system, most of us are unrepresented because the people we voted for did not get elected. Conversely, most MPs "represent" mostly people who voted against them.

What can we do about it? Check out these websites:

Thanks! I like your point. How can we differentiate universal truth from personal truth? Can there really be non-mathematical universal truths in our infinitely complex world? In the end, is the dictionary definition of truth wishful thinking, or just an abstract goal? Hmm...

I think what most people call "the truth" is really "what they believe to be true". However, due to our lack of omniscience, we are incapable of distinguishing between true beliefs and the truth. Doing so would require that we know what the real truth is, in which case we wouldn't need any beliefs!

We can however, challenge our beliefs and see if they can be disproven. If so, the belief not only ceases to be seen as the truth, but we also stop believing it! Oops ... "truth" still means what be believe.

The word "belief" is often used to mean either "opinion" or "truth" however, so you might say "truth" is a sort of strong belief.

Also, some people don't believe things easily and challenge the beliefs of others in order to "hunt for the truth". Tested beliefs seem more "true" to the rest of us because they're less likely to turn out false ... but even then, can we ever assert the truth to be truly true?

Only in mathematics and other pure fields can we find fundamentals truths which really can not be disproven.

Anyway, this was a really long comment - whoa!

Thanks for the thought-provoking article!

I think what most people call “the truth” is really “what they believe to be true”. However, due to our lack of omniscience, we are incapable of distinguishing between true beliefs and the truth. Doing so would require that we know what the real truth is, in which case we wouldn’t need any beliefs!

We can however, challenge our beliefs and see if they can be disproven. If so, the belief not only ceases to be seen as the truth, but we also stop believing it! Oops … “truth” still means what be believe.

The word “belief” is often used to mean either “opinion” or “truth” however, so you might say “truth” is a sort of strong belief.

Also, some people don’t believe things easily and challenge the beliefs of others in order to “hunt for the truth”. Tested beliefs seem more “true” to the rest of us because they’re less likely to turn out false … but even then, can we ever assert the truth to be truly true?

Only in mathematics and other pure fields can we find fundamentals truths which really can not be disproven.

Anyway, this was a really long comment – whoa!

Thanks for the thought-provoking article!

With regards to self-fulfilling prophecies, this isn't only a phenomenon of revising history - a positive outlook also allows you to get more positive results.

Consider the bias "life is difficult" or "bad things always happen to me." Not only will your memories be kept in line with these beliefs, but your actions will also be changed to support them. The mind actively pursues actions that support our beliefs and avoid cognitive dissonance.

On the other side, a bias of "people always like me" or "I easily achieve success" allows a person to see and take advantage of opportunities ignored by their more dour counterparts because success won't cause any dissonance.

Nice post. I find media reporting of scientific studies hilarious sometimes. The Daily Mail in particular is always good for a laugh.

Cheers,

Thanks!

It's hard enough to overcome our own mental barriers in order to admit mistakes, but to overcome societal ones is even harder. I agree, I think most people just want the truth, but it doesn't seem like something we're going to often get from our leaders / experts...

Wow, Jason your example of the exhibit at the Canadian War Museum and your conclusion that what we do is decide that "Mistakes were made, but theirs were worse. Who writes history? The winner of course…" was terrific.

It's so ironic to me because often what people most want is an honest acknowledgment that wrong has been done to them and a sincere apology for it. Yet that's exactly what cognitive dissonance inhibits us from providing. I haven't been able to find the referene for this, but I recall reading about a hospital system in one of the United States which began to encourage its physicians to apologize to patients and their families were they had made a mistake. This was partly in response to some change in the State's laws that made it less likely that such apologies would be used to support lawsuits against the physician. The result, as I recall, was a significant reduction in physicians being sued. I really think we often just want the someone to honestly acknowledge and apologize for the harm that's been done. Anyway, another interesting blog from you - Thanks.
